White  Temple

We pick you up between 08.00 am – 08.30 am from your hotel and start the sightseeing tour at Wat Rong Khun (known among foreigners as the White Temple). The White Temple is artistically different from other temples in Thailand. The temple was built by the artist Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat. He wanted to build the most beautiful temple in the world to show the glory of modern Thai Buddhist arts. In collaboration with 80 followers, Ajarn devoted his time, effort, and energy to make this astounding structure his life work.

Black House

Created by Thailand national artist Thawan Duchanee. The ground includes nearly 40 small black houses made of wood, glass, concrete, bricks, and terracotta arranged in various unique styles and designs scattered around the temple area. The cluster of houses accommodates Thawans collections of paintings, sculptures, animal bones, skins, horns, silver, and gold items from around the world. Several of the houses exhibit Balinese and Burmese architecture.

Long Neck Karen

Kayan long-neck women wear neck rings from childhood. Starting with four or five, they annually add more as they get accustomed to the increased weight. Coils weighing up to 25 pounds, which depress the chest and shoulders. This creates the illusion of disembodied head hovering over a shimmering pedestal of gold rings. Contrary to popular belief, the coils don’t lengthen the neck itself and thus can be removed without the neck snapping. To this day, the women still wear these coils year-round with few exceptions. The origin of the tradition mystifies even the Kayans. An ancient legend claims that the rings protected villagers from tiger attacks since the cats attack victims at the neck. Another theory said the rings helped ward off men from rival tribes by lessening the women’s beauty. Today, people believe the opposite - the longer their neck, the more beautiful the woman - and Kayans wear the golden coils as an accessory.

This tribe village is just one of the many tribes living in the area. Other well-known hill tribes live in the Akha, Lahu, and Yao villages.
